New Trustees Wanted

The Sandford St Martin (Church of England) Trust is seeking professionals with Fundraising, Investment or Financial Management and/or Media/Broadcasting or Broadcast Policy Making experience to join its board of trustees.

The Sandford St Martin Trust has been making annual awards for the best programmes about religion, ethics and spirituality since 1978.  The awards are open to a wide range of genres – news, current affairs, arts, comedy, drama and factual as well as to ‘traditional’ religious broadcasting – and are open to programmes about any faith or belief system.  Recent winners have included Sally Phillips, Lyse Doucet, Dame Joan Bakewell, Simon Schama, Ian Hislop and many others.  In addition to its awards, the Trust works to make the case for religious literacy in the media and broadcasting about religion and ethics year-round through lobbying at legislative, regulatory and industry levels and through partnerships with broadcasters, programme-makers and others who share our belief in the value of creative, thoughtful and entertaining programmes in these areas.  The Trust believes the media can be a powerful tool to increase understanding of different perspectives and beliefs in our world, helping create greater understanding and tolerance. The Trust is politically independent and is not affiliated with any media company or organisation.  It does not proselytise on behalf of or promote any particular religion or faith, nor does it engage in religious activities itself.

About the trustee role:

As a trustee you would play a key role in planning the Trust’s strategic future, maintaining financial stability and matching its resources to its objectives.  Trustees are also responsible for ensuring the Trust is properly led and organised to fulfil all its legal obligations.

General board meetings are held four times a year in Westminster, Central London.  Prospective trustees will also be expected to play an active role in the operation of the charity by participating in at least one of the Trust’s working groups (Finance, Management, PR/Communications, Awards and Events, Fundraising).  This part of the role could involve liaising with the Trust’s financial managers, speaking to prospective donors, contributing to research or publications, attending or speaking at events, speaking to or writing for the media, depending the trustee’s particular skills and interests.  The Trust’s working groups meet at most four times a year.

Trustees are also invited to attend the Trust’s annual broadcasting awards – held in June at Lambeth Palace – and to occasionally represent the Trust at other public events or to engage with external partners.

The Trust imagines that this role would be particularly suitable for someone with current (or recent) experience of either working within the financial, accountancy, charities’ regulatory or broadcasting (programme-making, commissioning or regulatory) sectors.

While the trustee role is unpaid, the Trust can reimburse travel.
