SANDFORD ST MARTIN 2022 AWARDS SHORTLISTS
Shortlisting for the Sandford St Martin Awards is a little like taking a dip into a lake of the UK’s collective subconscious. Wade in and you find yourself wallowing in the concerns, hopes and obsessions that have consumed content-makers and audiences over the last year. Invariably there are some themes that float to the surface. My colleague Jess Lewis put it very succinctly when she said that this year the floaters are to do with “people and the planet” – but have a look at the lists below and you’ll be amazed by invention and variety in which they’ve been explored. As ever we are exceedingly grateful and indebted to our shortlisters – accomplished subconscious lake swimmers all – who undertake the hardest part of making the Awards work. In total they have dedicated hundreds (quite possibly thousands) of hours to carefully viewing and reviewing entries. They have cogitated, deliberated, opined and argued. Shortlisting is equal measures art and science – we are lucky that, once again, our shortlisters are committed students of both.
Congratulations to everyone who entered this year’s awards – there was some truly brilliant work that could not be represented below. And best of luck to this year’s finalists for the final lap.
