SANDFORD ST MARTIN 2023 AWARDS SHORTLISTS

After a tough couple of years, with fears of Covid receding, there were times when 2022 almost felt like it was going to be easy. Then there was war in Ukraine. In the UK we saw three prime ministers in less than a year, a cost of living crisis, and, of course, the death of a beloved monarch. If people weren’t already teetering on the brink of an existential crisis, by the end of a tumultuous year we had had plenty of opportunities to be asking ourselves some very big questions about our responsibilities to our fellow citizens, to the planet, how to live an ethical life, and what it’s all about anyway. This mood is most definitely reflected in the the shortlists for this year’s awards which also explore who we are, how we got here and what happens next – questions that are often at the heart of faith.

On the flip side, all these questions mean it’s been a good year for religious and ethical broadcast content – if a tough one for this year’s shortlisters who have had to grapple with possibly the highest standard of entries ever received. We are extremely grateful to them for the thought, consideration and dedication they have devoted to what has been a daunting task.  And while kudos are due to our finalists, I’d also like to congratulate all of this year’s entrants. The lists below are only the very tip of an iceberg of excellence.
