SANDFORD ST MARTIN 2021 AWARDS SHORTLISTS
It seems a bit simplistic to observe that, as years go, 2020 was a turbulent one. Looking back, what will we remember? The global pandemic, of course. Social unrest and protest as millions of people took to the street under banners demanding the right to be heard, seen and to breathe. Growing concerns about climate change as wildfires swept through California and Australia. Brexit. Megxit. And then there was “that” election.
It’s been an anxious and demanding time and no one working in the media or broadcasting has been immune to the impact. Many of those subjects feature in this year’s Awards shortlists, but, reviewing what’s there, I’ve been particularly struck (and relieved) by how so many entrants found a way to counter the weight of the times we’re living in, with stories that also concern love, forgiveness, resilience, determination and solidarity.
If we’re living through a period of change, challenge and uncertainty, this year’s shortlists prove that even while working under unprecedented, difficult circumstances, broadcasters, content-makers and creatives can rise to the occasion to inform, educate and entertain. More so than ever, it’s been an honour and a privilege to have been sent their work for consideration in this year’s competition. Particular congratulations to those who are finalists for Awards this year. But most sincere congratulations to all who entered – you have all been an inspiration.
